
Julie London (nee Peck, September 26, 1926 - October 18 20th, 2000) is an American actor and singer. Her career spanned more 40 years. London was a torch performer well-known for her smooth, soft vocals. She recorded more than 30 albums of standards and jazz between 1955 and 1969. Her recording of "Cry me a river" that she introduced on her debut album, was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2001. In addition to the music-related recognition, London was nominated for a Golden Globe Award in 1974 for her portrayal of nurse Dixie McCall in the television show Emergency!. Born in Santa Rosa, California, to vaudevillian parents, London was discovered while working as an elevator operator in downtown Los Angeles, and she began her acting career. London's 35 year acting career began with film in 1944. It featured parts as the female lead role in a variety of westerns. In the middle of the 1950s, she signed a recording contract with Liberty Records. This was the beginning of her professional music career. Her final studio album was released in 1969. Her success continued as the female star role of Dixie McCall on the television show Emergency! (1972-1979) In the show, she played alongside her husband Bobby Troup. Jack Webb produced the show.
